Coronavirus and Your Heart: Tips for People Living with Heart Disease

[Tucson, AZ] Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death for adults over 65 in the United States. COVID-19 puts people with heart disease at increased risk of contracting the virus and the complications that come with it.

Ajay Tuli, MD“While the focus on preventing the spread of the virus is important, it is also paramount for heart disease patients to continue to take prescribed medications and follow up with their cardiologists, eat well, manage stress and exercise if it is safe for them to do so,” says Pima Heart & Vascular President Ajay Tuli, MD.

Physicians at Pima Heart & Vascular emphasize the importance of preventing the spread of the virus and have implemented various precautions to ensure the safety of patients and staff to limit risks. This includes telehealth options for many of their patients during this time.

“We are prepared to continue to care for the cardiovascular health of our community, and would like to emphasize that people with heart disease are especially vulnerable during this time and should exercise the most extreme caution,” says Dr. Tuli.

The following are a few tips that Pima Heart & Vascular suggests to support self-care:

Take prescribed medications: Please do not stop taking a medication without consulting your prescribing physician.

Eat nutritious foods: Continue to eat fruits and vegetables, limiting processed food as much as possible.

Stop smoking: Cigarettes cause your arteries to constrict, making your heart work harder, raising blood pressure and increasing your risk for stroke.

Exercise: Move your body for at least 30 minutes a day. Take your pet for walk, put on an online workout video, or use household items for light resistance training. Regular exercise helps keep your heart muscles stronger and can lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Incorporate relaxation techniques: Stress can affect your immune system. Take time for yourself to practice stress relieving activities such as gentle yoga, meditation, journaling or gardening. It is ok to limit the amount of media you are consuming.

Find support: While social distancing is an effective tool to keep you safe, it is important to maintain social relationships. Make time for phone calls or video chats with your loved ones.

Communicate with your health care providers: It is important that your health care team know about your concerns and symptoms. Make sure to write down all questions you have for your provider, then you can ask them during your next appointment.

Note: Please call your doctor if you are experiencing any health concerns.

[TUCSON, AZ, JANUARY 8, 2020] Pima Heart and Vascular has joined with Tucson Heart Group, a move that brings the 40-year-old practice to 61 providers and 360 support staff across Southern Arizona. The partnership will allow for increased collaboration among medical, clinical and administrative staff, as well as streamline systems and processes.

“With two highly reputable, locally-owned, cardiovascular groups, it just makes sense to work together. This partnership will help us to provide a better, more cohesive patient experience while maintaining all of our business and operations within Southern Arizona,” said Pima Heart and Vascular President Ajay Tuli, MD.

Tucson Heart Group, which was formed in 1994, is comprised of Dr. James Evans, Dr. Lionel Faitelson, Dr. Basel Skeif, Dr. Samir Dahdal and Dr. Constantin Catalin Boiangiu. These physicians will continue to see patients in their current locations and will maintain their current staff.

“When it comes to cardiovascular health and interventions, we can care for all, right here in Tucson and at our Southern Arizona clinics.  That is good for patients and for the community.” said Tucson Heart Group physician, Basel Skeif, MD.

Pima Heart and Vascular is no stranger to partnership and collaboration. In the last several years, the entity added vascular surgeons Dr. John Pacanowski and Dr. Luis Leon to the group to form a more comprehensive practice.  It has continued to add additional vascular surgeons, including Dr. Robert Fincher, Dr. Scott Berman, Dr. Bernardo Mendoza, Dr. Joseph Sabat and Dr. Joshua Balderman. An additional interventional cardiologist, Dr. Kirk Gavlick has started seeing patients in January 2020, while cardiologists Dr. Gregory Koshkarian and Dr. Gordon Watson have announced they will be joining in July 2020.

Update:  Dr. Koshkarian will see patients starting March 2020 and Dr. Watson will see patients in April 2020.

“It’s quite common for cardiac and vascular issues to occur together. By working together, we’ve been able to get patients treated faster and with better outcomes because we are all on the same page and communicating closely with one another,” said Raj Desai, MD.

Plant Based Nation – Better Living Through Plant Based Eating

Presented by Dr. Sal (Salvatore J. Tirrito, MD, FACC – Pima Heart Cardiologist)

Tirrito 2012The majority of chronic diseases that plagues us as a society, whether it is cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, fatigue, you name it, all have the same root cause. Inflammation. It is this highly inflammatory state that our bodies are in all the time that breaks down our immunity, breaks down our spirit (because we feel unwell most of the time), and slowly breaks down our bodies. Unfortunately, for most people, getting older means getting sicker, losing your mobility, taking more and more medications, and generally enjoying a pretty dismal quality of life. This doesn’t have to be the case. For most of us, we can dramatically improve the quality of our lives now and as we get older by changing what we put into our mouths.

The Plant Based Nation Movement is dedicated to giving you the guidance, the information and the resources to help you along your journey to a healthier, happier, more energetic you.
